That’s exciting! Like a kid with a new toy kind of exciting!
We are waiting for pictures.
Enjoy!
With my shoulder and our schedule it is going to take a couple of days, but I will post some pics.
Time for an update, Mike. How are the new bikes?
Got them together, but need to fine tune and adjust for each of us still. Trying to find the time to do that as it takes a lot longer to do anything now at my age. Should not be much longer. I will post pictures and let you know what we think after spending $4400…
Okay Mike, we will watch for your next post with much anticipation.
Pop a wheelie! ![]()
I think the power to weight ratio is way too low to be able to do that L Man…. Way too much weight between the axles! ![]()
The bike weighs about 70 pounds and I am 195, totaling about 265 pounds. With a 1’ max lever arm off the back axle to the combined CG, it would take a torque in excess of 265 foot pounds to do that. Don’t think it has that kind of power, yet.
Don’t confuse me with the facts! Pop a wheelie! ![]()
I guess you did not like Jack Webb on Dragnet!
I did. I watched it a lot.
Like BA, I’m anxious to see your bikes.
Me too! Pictures or it didn’t happen!
I am still, cough, too young to go for an e-bike but the one person I knew that had one loved it. Some of my friends are ready to get e-bikes due to age. They’ll probably make that investment next year.
They rented some on a couple of European cycling vacations and said they were great. It provided that extra bit of power climbing that they need now.
Any way to get exercise is good to me.
I didn’t see any pix so…are they together yet?
They are together - been so for a couple of months now. Just have not had the time to get them going yet. I will get there.
My bikes are so old they have shifters and brake pads. Everything is attached to cables.
I went riding w/ a bunch of women and got way too many comments about my “retro” bikes. But I consoled myself w/ still having enough wit to know how and when to use them. No stinkin’ auto shifting for me.
I learned earlier this year that many of them are riding ebikes. That explains why some of them were able to ride faster than me and especially uphill. I am something of a mountain goat.
Overall, I think I will be sticking w/ my retro bicycles for the time being.
“auto shifting” for bikes!? I never heard of such a feature.
You are not alone, my 1997 road bike is still going strong! It is ssssssoooooooo easy/comfortable to ride.
ebikes - I am considering one, an etrike, for purposes of an occasional ride into town for groceries or otherwise. but this situation will only occur is the state builds the bike path along hwy into town. i’ll be in my 70’s when that bike path gets done.
I got to ride an e-bike conversion last weekend. It was a conventional bike with a kit added to power the rear wheel. Five levels of power assist from “barely feel it” to “runaway horses”. It was fun and didn’t take long to pick up how to use it.
While the sprockets are still there, and technically can be used, the electric motor was set up to do most of the work, though it didn’t do much shifting, if any. I tried using it like a regular bike, but the gear shifters were disabled, so clicking for a higher/lower gear didn’t do anything. I would struggle to get up a hill without power assist - such as when the battery is dead - because it won’t let me manually force it into a lower gear to crank harder. Maybe there was an override that I didn’t find.
I talked to the owner about it, but he was just too excited by the change to talk technical about it.
If I was commuting daily, this would be a pleasant and useful option. Arriving at the office not covered in sweat is a plus.
For my other rides on hills or just for fresh air, I don’t see the point of an e-bike. Those rides are to burn off energy or whatever latent aggression that just needs to get out!
